Description
- Beads: The beads are made from the skeletal remains of marine animals called coral polyps, composed primarily of calcium carbonate. The number of beads is typically 108 plus one larger bead, known as the “guru bead”.
- Color: Genuine red coral can range in color from pale orange-red to a deep, vibrant “oxblood” red. The most valuable varieties, such as Italian and Japanese red coral, have a fine texture and richer, more uniform color.
- Appearance: A natural, untreated red coral mala will often have subtle color inconsistencies, fine lines, or small pores, which are marks of authenticity. Imitations may appear too flawless or uniform.
- Tactile properties: Authentic coral feels cool to the touch and is relatively lightweight. It is also fairly soft, with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 4, so it can be scratched by harder materials.
